BELGRAVE Heights Christian School honoured the Anzacs on Wednesday, 27 April, through a special visit from Rat of Tobruk, Jack Caple.
The Rats of Tobruk nickname was bestowed on soldiers who fought in the siege of Tobruk during World War II.
Mr Caple is the great-grandfather of a student at the school, Emily Chudasko, who is this year in Prep.
For the special occasion, about 850 attended the whole-school event, which included students, teachers, parents and community members.
Mr Caple spoke to the guests about his experiences in the war, as well as bringing in some mementoes such as his helmet, water canteen and food container.
Principal Andy Callow said he was delighted with how many students wanted to meet Mr Caple after the service and thank him for attending.
Service organiser Mrs Joy McGrath ensured the service was dignified, succinct and moving, with her efforts earning special praise from the school.
