A MAN from Woori Yallock has been taken by air to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition after a car crash in Montrose this morning.
The man, aged in his sixties, was driving a Ford wagon west along Leith Road when another car lost control and the two collided at about 5.15am.
Police said a Holden Ute lost control around the roundabout at the Leith Road and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road intersection, crashing through the fence on the median strip and into the Ford.
The driver of the Holden Ute, a 51-year-old Croydon man, is uninjured and assisting police with inquiries.
Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Michael Pryor said the road and time of day were factors rather than the roundabout itself.
“I wouldn’t call it a dangerous roundabout,” he said.
“I’ve been to other collisions there before and while it was lucky there were no other cars around this morning, I don’t think this incident is related to the intersection itself.”
The roundabout is open to traffic again after being closed since about 6am this morning.
